The State of Education

April 6, 2007

This blog is all about the contrast between where education should head (in theory) and what is actually being done (in current practice).

In the year 2007, why are we still teaching cursive?

Why are we still lecturing to twenty-some students at the same time?

Why are students still grouped by age instead of by what they need to be working on?

Why does every child not have an in-school laptop yet?

Provocative questions! All the seminars and professional development I’ve participated in have focused on what “good teaching” is, but have never questioned if the “good teaching” is appropriate to our changing time. Keep the questions coming! And perhaps some answers as well.
