So my students were attempting to do some blogging today when we found that our district has apparently implemented some new internet security software that gave us this message:
Your organization’s Internet use policy restricts access to this web page at this time.
Reason: The Websense category “Education” is filtered.
Seriously. I had to read it twice to believe it. Who in their right mind would decide that sites categorized as “education” should be blocked from a school? The “games” category is also blocked. (So much for Multiflyer.)
No one wants X-rated images to pop up when our children are searching the web. I get that. But if my district wants to utilize the power of technology to the greatest extent possible, we are going to have to trust our teachers and students a whole lot more than we apparently do right now.
