The Online Math League

October 7, 2008

It’s time once again for my annual invitation to all math teachers of students in second grade up through Algebra: come join the Online Math League!  (For people who aren’t long-time readers of this blog, I teach third grade but I also founded the Online Math League out of a desire to help even more students around the world love mathematics.)  If you’ve got your kids playing math games over at sites like Funbrain, we’ve got a huge upgrade in store for you.

You see, instead of having your students solve basic computation problems for yet another computer lab session, we offer a vast collection of higher-level thinking math problems that align with state and national standards.  These grade-level-specific practice sets offer immediate feedback and scaffolding to students who answer a problem incorrectly, and then the child is given a second chance to attempt the problem.  Students who answer incorrectly a second time are given additional feedback to help them learn the concept(s) required to solve that problem.

In addition to the 18 sets of the practice problems described above, by joining the Online Math League for the 2008-2009 school year, your students will get to compete in three real competitions against other students from around the world!  Every team that enters our contests will receive two medals for your top-scoring students on these real contests, and ALL of your students can have their scores proudly posted on our online results pages (using either their real first name and last initial, or a code number for privacy if preferred).

If you’re looking to add some excitement to your math class, you really need to join the Online Math League this year!
